A Weekend of Honor, Tradition, and Success at the Southern Maryland Convention

April 28, 2026

This past weekend, our department had the honor of participating in the Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen's Convention, held in Solomons, Maryland. It was a busy, meaningful, and enjoyable weekend spent alongside fellow volunteers from across the region.

Saturday began with the Joint Memorial Service, where we paused to honor and remember the dedicated volunteers we lost over the past year. Among those remembered were our own Gerald C. Peterson, a Charter Member of our department, and Margaret “Peg” Richardson, Company 7 Alarmers Auxiliary Life Member. Their service, dedication, and impact on our department will never be forgotten.

Following the service, members attended the Association dinner and meeting hosted by the Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department. During the evening, John Pardoe was officially sworn in as President of the Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen’s Association. We also celebrated those who were inducted into the Association’s Hall of Fame, an incredible honor recognizing years of dedication and service.

We are also proud to share that Stephanie Cunningham, President of the Company 7 Alarmers, was installed as Guard, and Lesa Free, Treasurer of the Company 7 Alarmers, was installed as Secretary to the Ladies Auxiliary to the Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen’s Association. We wish them both a successful and rewarding year in their new roles.

Sunday brought tradition and fun, with the annual firemen’s parade and games filling the streets of Solomons with pride and camaraderie.
We are incredibly proud to share that our department brought home several awards:

• Best Appearing Engine
• Best Appearing Brush Truck
• Best Appearing Special Unit
• First Place – Bucket Brigade Contest

Congratulations to all who participated and thank you to everyone who helped make the weekend such a success. It is always an honor to represent our community and stand alongside so many dedicated volunteers.
